About the Dugong
The dugong (Dugong dugon) is a large, fully marine mammal found in the warm coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific region, from East Africa to Australia. Closely related to manatees, dugongs are members of the order Sirenia, a lineage that evolved from terrestrial ancestors millions of years ago. Unlike manatees, dugongs possess a fluked tail similar to a dolphin’s and are strictly marine. Their skull is uniquely adapted with a ventrally deflected snout, allowing them to efficiently graze on seagrass beds along the ocean floor.
The dugong is currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with populations declining due to habitat loss, boat strikes, fishing net entanglement, and coastal development.
Skull Production
This 2/3 scale replica was created using a high-resolution 3D scan of an authentic Dugong dugon skull. It is 3d orinted in durable resin and carefully hand-finished to preserve anatomical accuracy, including the dense bone structure, tusk placement, and broad cranial surface. The scaled format allows for easier display while maintaining scientific precision.
Perfect For:
This dugong skull replica (2/3 scale) offers a striking and educational representation of one of the ocean’s most gentle and ancient herbivores—an exceptional addition to any marine biology, conservation, or natural history collection. 🌊🦴
